Summer Scams: Protecting Seniors from Financial Abuse

Summer is a season for sunshine, family visits, and relaxation—but unfortunately, it’s also peak season for scammers targeting seniors. At Clarity Legal Group®, we often see firsthand how financial abuse can upend lives. That’s why we’re committed to helping families stay informed and protected.

Why Seniors Are at Greater Risk

Older adults can be more vulnerable to scams for several reasons:

  • They may be managing health or cognitive challenges.
  • They often live alone or rely on others for support.
  • They are more likely to have retirement savings or equity in a home.

Summer often brings more time spent online, increased phone activity, and frequent travel. These changes can make seniors more accessible to fraudsters looking for easy targets.

Common Summer Scams to Watch For

1. Fake Utility or Maintenance Workers

Scammers may pose as air conditioning repair personnel, landscapers, or utility workers offering “urgent” services. They often ask for upfront payments or access to the home.

How to respond: Always verify credentials. Never let anyone inside without confirming with their employer.

2. Grandparent Scams

This heartbreaking scam involves someone pretending to be a grandchild in trouble and needing money urgently. They often call and pretend to be arrested, injured, or stuck in another country.

How to respond: Hang up and call the actual grandchild or another family member to confirm. Never send money or gift cards to someone you don’t know personally.

3. Summer Travel Scams

Scammers may offer “too-good-to-be-true” vacation deals or rental homes. Once paid, the service disappears.

How to respond: Book through reputable companies. Avoid wiring money or paying with gift cards.

4. Medicare and Health Insurance Scams

Con artists take advantage of summer’s open enrollment discussions to offer fake services or collect personal information.

How to respond: Never share Medicare numbers or personal info with unsolicited callers.

Warning Signs of Financial Exploitation

Even if a loved one doesn’t say anything, there are signs to watch for:

  • Sudden changes in spending patterns or bank account balances.
  • Unusual interest from new “friends” or helpers.
  • Missing valuables or unpaid bills.
  • Changes to legal documents without explanation.

How Estate Planning Can Offer Protection

A strong estate plan doesn’t just address what happens after death. It provides clear protections for financial management during life, especially if incapacity arises.

1. Living Trusts

Trusts allow a named Trustee, or Successor Trustee, to manage finances responsibly and privately, avoiding the delays and exposure of court guardianship.

2. Durable Financial Power of Attorney

This document authorizes someone you trust to manage legal and financial matters if you’re unable to do so.

3. Health Care Power of Attorney

Ensures someone you trust is empowered to make medical decisions and prevents strangers from stepping in during a crisis.

4. Regular Plan Reviews

Changes in family dynamics, health, or assets can make old plans outdated. We recommend reviewing your estate plan every 3–4 years, or sooner if you notice cognitive changes.

Simple Steps to Take Now

Talk about the Plan

Have a candid conversation with your loved ones about your estate plan. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Schedule a Review

Reviewing your estate plan ensures it still protects your wishes, your financial picture, and your family’s needs. It’s especially important after major life events such as a move, the birth of a child or grandchild, a death in the family, or significant changes in health or wealth. Even without a major change, we suggest a review every 3–4 years to keep your plan current and effective.
